Critical to every successful academic and industrial career is the ability to keep abreast of developments in your area of expertise. Through engaging with suitable seminars in your specialism, reading research papers and presenting on new developments, you will develop the skills that are essential in a fast-paced and constantly developing environment. You will also be introduced to, and become part of, a thriving research community and will develop key relationships and networking opportunities.
This module aims to introduce you to the people and papers that are at the forefront of research in your specialism, and to develop in you the key skills required to stay up-to-date with your subject knowledge and succeed in the professional and academic environment.
On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:
Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:
1 Appreciate the role of reading, writing and presenting in research;
2 Develop literature search and reading skills, allowing you to distill key concepts from the literature;
3 Summarise and explain scientific concepts;
Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:
4 Study specified themes in mathematical modelling;
Personal and Key Transferable/ Employment Skills and Knowledge:
5 Work collaboratively to understand advanced mathematical and scientific concepts;
6 Present ideas coherently and correctly in spoken and written English.
A selection of papers will be chosen for discussion, mirroring the topics and speakers for the relevant seminar series that students will be expected to attend.

Internal seminars take place approximately weekly for 1-hour for each research theme. Students are expected to attend the relevant seminars for their specialism.
An additional 1-hour slot weekly will be used to discuss the seminars, and for the students to present relevant theories and papers to each other to help improve understanding during the seminars.
