This module provides a case study-rich introduction to the nature, UK legal framework, assessment and remediation of contaminated land. It is aimed at those undertaking a career in environmental assessment and/or remediation, mineral exploration, mining geology, mining engineering, surveying and petroleum geology, and provides a grounding for post-graduate taught and research programmes in environmental geosciences.
The only pre-requisite for this module is CSM1031.
The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the causes, characteristics and hazards related to contaminated land and of the practical approaches to its assessment and remediation. The module is enriched with case studies from the lecturers’ own research experience.
On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:
Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:
1 Recognise and characterise sources and pathways of contamination and identify potential receptors;
2 Design a sampling programme;
3 Understand the principles of contaminant migration and bio-availability;
4 Suggest options for the remediation of a contaminated site;
Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:
5 Identify potential hazards at a contaminated site;
6 Suggest the most appropriate remediation methods and management strategies for a contaminated site;
Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge:
7 Select and organise material to produce a coherent argument in an oral presentation and professional report.
Weeks 1-2: Legal and financial framework; Site investigation and environmental impact assessment;
Weeks 3-5: Chemistry of contaminated land, risk analysis, case studies;
Weeks 6-7: In-situ and ex-situ remediation: physical, chemical and biological techniques;
Weeks 8-10: Contaminated land and remediation case studies.
