Modern applications of mathematics often require the development and analysis of computer simulations. This module is an introduction to relevant programming principles, languages and computational techniques essential to the skillset of an applied mathematician. Theory will be complemented by practical programming labs and case studies in topics related to our research expertise, such as Climate Science, Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics, and Mathematical Biology. A key outcome from this module is to give you the skills to design and analyse your own computational models, and the flexibility to be comfortable working in different programming environments.
This module aims to introduce students to modern progamming techniques for mathematical modelling. This will include practical knowledge in relevant programming languages, the use of version control, and remote scripting for long-run simulations.
On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

1 Demonstrate expertise in the use of relevant programming languages and techniques widely used both inside and outside the academic community;
2 Use your programming skills to model challenging mathematical problems;

3 Tackle a wide range of mathematical problems using modern numerical methods;
4 Model realistic situations and also understand the principles underlying the techniques and when they are applicable;

5 Show enhanced modelling, problem-solving and computing skills, and acquired tools that are widely used in mathematical modelling.
- Introduction to a selection of programming languages e.g. Matlab, Python, Fortran;
- Key skills for programmers, including version control, documenting code, and running simulations remotely;
- Principles of mathematical modelling and numerical methods;
- Case studies.

If a module is normally assessed entirely by coursework, all referred/deferred assessments will normally be by assignment.
If a module is normally assessed by examination or examination plus coursework, referred and deferred assessment will normally be by examination. For referrals, only the examination will count, a mark of 50% being awarded if the examination is passed. For deferrals, candidates will be awarded the higher of the deferred examination mark or the deferred examination mark combined with the original coursework mark.
