GIS has become an increasingly important tool for the representation and analysis of spatial data. This module aims to introduce you to the concept of GIS and then gives you the opportunity to develop that understanding through several practical exercises in which you will collect survey data and then use GIS as an aid to data interpretation. The required prior knowledge of surveying will have been taught in preceding modules. The skills and techniques learnt on this module are likely to be of use for the subsequent dissertation as well as in your career as a surveyor.
The module aims to give candidates an overview of GIS as a tool to support surveying, with specific skills relating to data input and geo-referencing.
On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:
Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:
1. Acquire and geo-reference data for GIS use;
2. Represent and correlate multiple spatial data sets of varying natures.
Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:
3. Collect, compile and format data for subsequent processing;
4. Recognise and accommodate issues of accuracy and projection when managing geo-referenced data.
Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge:
5. Create graphical representations of geo-referenced data sets;
6. Exhibit group working skills, functioning as a member of a small survey team.
Lectures and practical sessions:
- Introduction to basic concepts;
- Data collection and preparation;
- Data input and geo-referencing;
- 3D data;
- Layering data and editing.
