DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

With energy prices soaring and governments striving to meet global emissions targets, energy management is becoming increasingly important. Linked to these factors are great opportunities to embed generation, take advantage of renewable energy policies and adopt new technologies.

By taking this module, you will not only acquire specific knowledge of energy management but also begin to develop the critical skills needed to become an energy professional.  This module is suitable for you if you are studying energy as a subject area and are familiar with the terminology and SI units used to describe energy and power. You will also need to be engaged in concurrent learning of (or have existing knowledge of) electrical power systems / machines and thermodynamics.

 

AIMS - intentions of the module

The module is designed to help you appreciate the importance of managing energy as a resource and to learn the fundamentals of energy management..Furthermore, it aims to help you understand the opportunities that exist for improving energy conversion efficiency, reducing energy waste and embedding energy generation / conversion into a demand centre.

By the end of this module, you will be able to conduct energy use audits in commercial premises and implement targeting and monitoring regimes including the specification of appropriate instrumentation. 

Moreover, you will be aware of purchasing opportunities for energy and other financial factors relating to energy use in the UK and elsewhere. Finally, from the above, you will be able to identify energy management requirements within an SME and to draw up and implement an appropriate energy management strategy / plan.

On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:



Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:

1. Comprehend energy efficiency measures and technologies;

2. Appreciate the economic environment relating to energy management;

3. Understand energy loss via heat transfer and its reduction by insulation;

4. Model energy projects using RETScreen software;

5. Grasp the core energy management principles of assessing, targeting and monitoring energy use.



Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:

6. Demonstrate skills in data acquisition, interpretation and communication

7.. Show knowledge and experience in finding and interpreting legislation relevant to project development;

8. Effectively use resources provided and locate further resources to supplement study;

9. Recognise the principles behind and methods of achieving, a financially optimized embedded energy generation / conversion.



Personal and Key Transferable/ Employment Skills and  Knowledge:

10. Demonstrate analytical skills appropriate to the energy sector;

11. Understand the method for financial appraisal of a capital energy project;

12. Communicate effectively in a manner appropriate to professional work within the energy sector;

13. Develop working relationships of a professional nature within the energy sector.
 

 

SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module

- introduction to energy management;

- overview of supply side management - invoices, tariffs, load shifting / shedding;

- field trip / case study;

- embedding generation into a demand centre (CHP / renewables);

- saving energy through enhanced selection and control of electrical machinery;

- project finance evaluation;

- introduction to RETScreen energy project analysis software;

- energy audits, Sankey diagrams and reporting;

- setting targets and monitoring energy use;

- using CUSUM charts;

- assignment workshop;

- understanding space heating and insulation;

- lighting in buildings.
