DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

This course shows you how engineering managers may deploy tools and techniques, such as statistics, design and data analysis and project planning aspects, to make business decisions. You will learn the application of elementary statistics for presentation, analysis and inference in quality control in manufacturing. You will also learn about the concepts and relevance of design and project planning, and their delivery in successful business management. Coursework will include practical sessions using relevant project planning computer software.
 

AIMS - intentions of the module

This module is designed to introduce you to the market and how this fits with engineering design, as well as how tasks are planned and carried out, and some elementary tools used by engineering managers. The knowledge you gain from this course will be useful for your appreciation of higher level courses, especially in quantitative business analysis.

This is a constituent module of one or more degree programmes which are accredited by a professional engineering institution under licence from the Engineering Council. On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

1 rapidly choose and implement an appropriate numerical and statistical methodology for a specified engineering design problem;

2 explain the basic concepts of project planning and design management applied to engineering, and statics,

3 describe how to check the accuracy and relevance of statistical results;

4 apply design management techniques, e.g. market research, develop product design specs, conceptual design, manufacture and sales

5 apply project planning techniques, e.g. PERT/CPM methods, develop Gantt chats, work breakdown structures

6 understand how non-engineering personnel and techniques affect decision-making in product design, and communicate their work to technical and non-technical audiences

7 evaluate design data to locate the appropriate techniques to solve engineering problems

8. understand technical literature and research as part of product design

SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module

- total design: product design specification and design for the market, manufacture and life cycle;

- statistics: elementary statistical presentation and analysis inference, significance testing;

- project planning: project design, work breakdown structures, programme evaluation and review technique (PERT) and critical path analysis.

RE-ASSESSMENT NOTES

If a module is normally assessed entirely by coursework, all referred/deferred assessments will normally be by assignment.

If a module is normally assessed by examination or examination plus coursework, referred and deferred assessment will normally be by examination. For referrals, only the examination will count, a mark of 40% being awarded if the examination is passed. For deferrals, candidates will be awarded the higher of the deferred examination mark or the deferred examination mark combined with the original coursework mark.
