DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

The module uses case studies of simple and complex engineering design to build an understanding of the processes inherent within such work.  The case studies are scrutinised in a seminar environment with the delivery of supporting material in lectures.   Examples of innovative thinking are explored and the link between innovation and design is made.  Students undertake a design challenge which runs through a large part of the module and serves to draw tecniques and knowledge into the study environment.  An introduction to intellectual property (patents) is included together with guidance on the benefits and detriments of registering IP.

AIMS - intentions of the module

The Engineering Design and Innovation module aims to develop the student's understanding of engineering design and the key stages of a successful design process.  It builds competence and confidence in each of these stages and provides a gateway towards complex engineering design and innovation within their subsequent career.

On successful completion of this module you should be able to:

1. show an awareness of the total design process (including concept, design, drawing, manufacturing and testing);
2. demonstrate experience of component selection
3. apply your previous learning to the development of the design design analysis, calculations,materials selection, and prototype drawings;
4. use suitable software aids in the exploration of the design solution

Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge

5. think creatively and integrate subject specific knowledge and understanding from previous modules into the analysis and solution of challenging design problems;
6. assess the merits of a number of design solutions taking into account conflicting factors;
7. develop a suitable design specification;
8. Recognise the existence of the many pressures and constraints on engineering design.

Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge

9. extract, filter and process a wide range of information;
10. develop team skills;
11. demonstrate improved presentational skills;
12. develop enhanced report writing skills;
13. prove experience of providing critical feedback to colleagues;
