MODULE TITLEManagement Science CREDIT VALUE15
MODULE CODEECMM172 MODULE CONVENERProf Voicu Ion Sucala (Coordinator)
DURATION: TERM 1 2 3
DURATION: WEEKS 11 weeks
Number of Students Taking Module (anticipated) 0
DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

This module aims to develop your skills in management science, applying advanced analytical methods to help you make optimal decisions. It will also enhance your ability of the use of mathematical modelling technologies and computer simulation to tackle modern operations and supply chain management problems.

The knowledge you gain on this module will help you to appreciate a range of associated courses, especially in manufacturing and service operational and supply chain analysis areas.

AIMS - intentions of the module

This module aims to give you an understanding of modern management science and operations and supply chain modelling technologies, including: operations research; industrial/service systems modelling/simulation, and advanced topics in management science such as supply chain optimization.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)

This is a constituent module of one or more degree programmes which are accredited by a professional engineering institution under licence from the Engineering
Council. The learning outcomes for this module have been mapped to the output standards required for an accredited programme, as listed in the current version
of the Engineering Council’s ‘Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes’ document (AHEP-V3).

This module maps to learning outcomes: SM1m, SM1fl, SM2m, EA3m, EA5m, EA1fl, EA2fl, D1m, D2m, D6m, D7m, D8m, D2fl, D3fl, ET4m, ET4fl, EP1m, EP8m, EP10m, EP3fl, G1m – G4m and G1fl – G4fl

A full list of the referenced outcomes is provided online: http://intranet.exeter.ac.uk/emps/subjects/engineering/accreditation/

The AHEP document can be viewed in full on the Engineering Council’s website, at http://www.engc.org.uk/

On successful completion of this module you should be able to:

Module Specific Skills and Knowledge: SM1fl,  EA1fl

1. select and apply modern management science and methodologies to example situations;
2. understand modern tools and techniques for engineering management including production planning and control, information systems, process control, linear and dynamic programming, discrete event simulation, systems modelling and analysis, and operational strategies;
3. use learnt engineering management tools and techniques to solve practical problems.

Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:  ET4fl,  EP3fl

4 apply generic engineering management techniques and skills to different industrial/commercial situations;
5 reveal advanced problem-solving skills and adapt such skills to solving increasing complex industrial problems;
6. appreciate industrial situations that can be improved through simulation, and construct simulation models, using either programming techniques or packages, to analyse and solve problems..

Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge:  G1fl - G4fl

7 prove experience in project management skills, through set problem sheets and assignments, in terms of setting targets, scheduling and progress control;
8 illustrate experience of team work skills through group discussions and problem solving;
9 demonstrate experience in making presentations and communicate your work to technical and non- technical audiences;
10 exhibit advanced independent learning skills.
