This module covers engineering and environmental aspects of the drainage of rainwater and wastewater from areas of human development. The content includes basic principles and engineering best practice, with the latter being mainly (but not exclusively) based on UK practice. Relevant aspects of urban drainage are considered, such as design, analysis, modelling, operation and maintenance including health and safety issues, system rehabilitation, flooding and sustainable water management. Standard material is combined with current developments and recent literature and research outputs by the Centre for Water Systems.
This module aims to provide a basic knowledge of classical and contemporary problems in management of urban drainage systems for the practising engineer. It also offers gaining practical experience in using urban drainage modelling tools.
- Urban drainage systems - purpose, types and historical development Waste water generation
- Rainfall and surface runoff Hydraulics of sewer systems Sewer flow modelling principles Surcharging of sewer networks Urban flooding
- Design of foul sewers Design of storm sewers Combined sewer overflows Sewer sediments
- Pumped systems and storage
- Operation, maintenance and rehabilitation Whole-life costing
- Flow modelling tools
- Monitoring of drainage systems
- Rainwater harvesting
- Wastewater re-use
- Sustainable drainage systems Stormwater management
- Resilience and sustainability
