DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content
‘Design’ encompasses a wide range of knowledge and skills, which need to be brought together, to create a great building, structure or engineering feat. This module will allow you to employ the engineering knowledge and skills you have learned so far, on several Civil Engineering Design Activities (EDAs). Using the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Plan of Work as a framework, you will work through the design process; sketching, evaluating, and analysing, to reach a feasible solution.
 
The Engineering Design Activities (EDAs) involve the application of engineering principles to the solution of practical problems. These EDAs provide useful experience of  real engineering design, and practical construction skills.
 
AIMS - intentions of the module
The principal aim of this module is to develop and apply the engineering knowledge you have learned so far; and in doing so, better understand the design process. You will increase your knowledge of how buildings and structure’s function, and how they are put together.
 
Working on the design activities will improve your conceptual drawing, understanding of structural frames and ability to apply mathematics.

RE-ASSESSMENT NOTES

Deferral – if you have been deferred for any assessment you will be expected to submit the relevant assessment. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

 

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be expected to submit the relevant assessment. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of referral will be capped at 40%.
