DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content
In this challenge project, you will be presented with a project brief that asks you to develop the design of a large scale civil engineering project. You and your team will need to consider many aspects of the project environment  and will be required to complete a range of civil engineering and related tasks. These range from developing initial concept designs, to assessing likely environmental impact of the project, surveying the site, developing structural scheme designs and investigating various construction methods.
 
Supported through both academic and guest lectures, you will develop your knowledge and skill in a range of different areas including:
  • free-hand sketching
  • Physical prototyping
  • carrying out topographical surveys
  • presenting and articulating your work
  • knowledge of health and safety in the construction industry
  • knowledge of sustainability and environmental impact assessment
  • knowledge of current and emerging construction techniques
  • knowledge of structural scheme design
  • construction project management, personal time management and team working experience
Upon completion of the project, you will present your complete body of work as a team, showing how you responding to the brief and developed a solution through concept stage to scheme design stage with a viable physical prototype and plan for construction.
 
In this project, lectures only serve as a starting point, signposting you in the right direction. To excel in this project you will need initiative and drive to complete independent study and research and explore beyond what is discussed in lectures.
 
 
AIMS - intentions of the module

This project will give you your first introduction to what is involved in completing a realistic civil engineering project. It will allow you to put into context much of what you have learned in year 1. One of the overarching aim of this project is to provide you with the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge acquired in your study of Soil Mechanics, Solid Mechanics and Structural Behaviour.

ILO.1 - Analyse a project brief and extract key requirements required to satisfy the brief

ILO.4 - Put core engineering theory in structural mechanics, solid mechanics and soil mechanics into practice in the solution of an engineering problem

ILO.6 - Use fundamental mechanics to develop outline structural designs and assess load paths and likely failure mechanisms

RE-ASSESSMENT NOTES

Reassessment will be by a single piece of coursework worth 100% of the module only. For referred candidates, the module mark will be capped at 40%. For deferred candidates, the module mark will be uncapped.
