This project will give you your first introduction to what is involved in completing a realistic civil engineering project. It will allow you to put into context much of what you have learned in year 1. One of the overarching aim of this project is to provide you with the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge acquired in your study of Soil Mechanics, Solid Mechanics and Structural Behaviour.
Programmes that are accredited by the Engineering Council are required to meet Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (AHEP4) Learning Outcomes. The Engineering Council AHEP4 Learning Outcomes are taught and assessed on this module and identified in brackets below.’
Module Specific Skills and Knowledge
1. Select and apply appropriate computational and analytical techniques to model complex problems, recognising the limitations of the techniques employed (C3)
Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge
2. Design solutions for complex problems that evidence some originality and meet a combination of societal, user, business and customer needs as appropriate. This will involve consideration of applicable health & safety, diversity, inclusion, cultural, societal, environmental and commercial matters, codes of practice and industry standards (M5)
3. Apply an integrated or systems approach to the solution of complex problems (M6)
Personal and Key Transferable/Employment Skills and Knowledge
4. Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader of a team (C16)
- An introduction to project management
- Technical report writing
- Freehand sketching and visual communication
