DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

Critical to every successful academic and industrial career is the ability to keep abreast of developments in your area of expertise. Through engaging with suitable seminars in your specialism, reading research papers and presenting on new developments, you will develop the skills that are essential in a fast-paced and constantly developing environment. You will also be introduced to, and become part of, a thriving research community and will develop key relationships and networking opportunities.

AIMS - intentions of the module

This module aims to introduce you to the people and papers that are at the forefront of research in your specialism, and to develop in you the key skills required to stay up-to-date with your subject knowledge and succeed in the professional and academic environment.

On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

1 Appreciate the role of reading, writing and presenting in research;

2 Develop literature search and reading skills, allowing you to distill key concepts from the literature;

5 Work collaboratively to understand advanced mathematical and scientific concepts;

A selection of papers will be chosen for discussion, mirroring the topics and speakers for the relevant seminar series that students will be expected to attend.

DETAILS OF LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING METHODS

Scheduled learning and teaching activities 44 Internal and external seminars (online) and/or research papers will be selected for each research theme. Students are expected to attend the relevant seminars for their specialism and/or read the relevant papers. An additional 1-hour slot weekly will be used to discuss the seminars and/or papers, and for the students to present relevant theories and papers to each other to help improve understanding of the selected topics.

RE-ASSESSMENT NOTES

Reassessment will be by coursework in the deferred elements only. For candidates who refer and/or defer one or both of the Presentations, the reassessment will be by a single presentation.  For candidates who refer and/or defer one or both of the Reports, the reassessment will be by a single Report. For referred candidates, the module mark will be capped at 50%. For deferred candidates, the module mark will be uncapped.
