Module description

Building on a solid foundation of learning in Classical Language and Texts: Latin I (A), this post-beginner module introduces further Latin morphology, syntax and vocabulary with a view to equipping you with the skills to read longer and more complex texts. By the end of the module, you will be able to read, comprehend and translate GCSE-level sentences and passages, and will be well-prepared, should you wish, to proceed to Latin II. 

Module aims - intentions of the module

This module aims to:

  • Build upon your pre-existing knowledge of basic Latin morphology, syntax, and vocabulary
  • Develop your language-learning skills
  • Enhance your understanding of how knowledge of Latin can enrich our understanding of Roman culture
  • Deepen your appreciation of the relationship between Latin and other Indo-European languages, including English

Syllabus plan

Whilst the content may vary from year to year, it is envisioned that the module will cover the grammar and vocabulary of Chapters 5-9 of Keller and Russell’s Learn to Read Latin (Yale University Press, 2006).

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
