Module description
This module will build on your existing knowledge of Greek. It will increase your fluency in reading whole Greek texts and strengthen your linguistic abilities. You will focus on studying a main set text and supplementary and supporting texts which will be complemented with classes dedicated to language and syntax work.

The module aims are:
- To study set texts, Greek language work and the practice of literary criticism together in a single integrated module.
- To prepare you for the study of Greek language and literature at a more advanced level.

Syllabus plan
Whilst the content may vary from year to year, it is envisioned that it will cover some or all of the following topics:
Term 1:
- One class per week is devoted to language/syntax work
- Two classes per week are devoted to the study of a main set text ('alpha text') and a number of supplementary or supporting texts ('beta texts')

Re-assessment notes
Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.
Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
Indicative learning resources - Basic reading
Basic reading:
Two alpha texts, to be confirmed by the module tutor. Students will be given a list of beta texts to be read in conjunction with these works by the lecturer.
By way of example, in past years the following texts have been studied:
- Term 1: Herodotus, Histories, 1. (ed. Sleeman; BCP).
- Term 2: Sophocles, Philoctetes. (ed. Schein; CUP).
