Module description

One of the most pervasive ways in which people communicate is through verbal language and other symbolic resources, such as visual signs, making language a powerful means not only to encode and communicate meanings, but also to shape perceptions, enact identities, and reinforce and contest hierarchies. This module will introduce you to the interplay between language and power dynamics in communication drawing from a wide range of verbal and visual texts. Through engaging with real communicative scenarios, you will develop a nuanced understanding of how language works in everyday life.

Module aims - intentions of the module

This module aims to:

  • develop your understanding of language as social practice
  • enable you to critically engage with key concepts such as language variation and linguistic prejudice, language and identity, language and gender and language and ideology
  • advance your understanding of how language is used in communication 
  • explore language in action in a variety of social contexts and processes

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
