This module covers the key aspects of health and safety that future managers and engineers will need to know and will find useful in their future lives and careers. The course and material is biased towards the minerals industry and is pragmatic as well as academic in nature.
This module would be useful to any student of any discipline or pathway.
The aim of this course is to provide you with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to undertake health and safety related activities within an industrial (mining) environment These skills include writing policies, assessing risks and investigating accidents in their chosen occupations. The course will also acquaint you with the key items of health and safety legislation found in industry today.
On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:
Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:
1 recognise, understand and be able to interpret key items of health and safety legislation;
2 understand the reasons for preventing accidents, dangerous occurrences & ill-health and the causes thereof;
3 facilitate risk assessments and accident investigations, and be able to draft such a health and safety document and/or safety case for operation.
Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:
4 appreciate the ever increasing role of health and safety in industry and be able to design and implement effective health and safety systems to minimise exposure to risk.
Personal and Key Transferable/ Employment Skills and Knowledge:
5 Independent study, acquisition of information and presentation in written form.
- reason for preventing accidents: moral, cost, legal, overview of legislation;
- accident aetiology: basic theories of accident causation, the role of human error in accidents, concept of active and latent failures; strategies for reducing human error;
- health and safety management: introduction, systems approach, key elements of a H&S management system, recent developments;
- risk assessment and management: concept of risk assessment, subjective and quantitative risk assessment tools and techniques;
- health assessment and surveillance: health risks, health risk management, health surveillance programmes;
- accident and incident investigations;
- safety culture and safety maturity.
