Mining design computer software has really altered the ways in which we design a mining project. This module gives you the opportunity to use the latest industry mine design software and create appropriate designs, with appreciation of the critical development constraints. You will also enhance your employment prospects by developing your skills using the latest mine design software packages widely recognised by the mining community.
The aim of this module would be to prepare you to understand the full mine design and planning process, through the use of modern mine software tools. The module is designed to provide you with current and useful employment skills, through learning to investigate the use of mine design software and to understand the operational principles underlying mine design software and its application.
This module covers Specific Learning Outcomes in Engineering, which apply to accredited programmes at Bachelors/MEng/Masters level. These contribute to the educational requirements for CEng registration (as defined under the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence – UK-SPEC).
On successful completion of this module you should be able to:
Module Specific Skills and Knowledge
2. Understand the theory behind mine design programs and how they are applied to the industry
Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge
4. Exhibit skills through the completion of a number of mine design projects
Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge
6. Reveal an insight into the role, importance and application of mine design in the professional mining engineering environment
The module will include a series of lectures covering advance topics including:
- Mine optimisation and cut off grades.
- Reserving for tabular deposits.
- Advanced geotechnical design associated with tabular orebodies.
- Subsidence.
There will be two assignments covering two additional mine planning methods and techniques using Deswik mine planning software.
