DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

This module content is based on the chosen area of independent research. The project topic can be on any aspect of the syllabus relating to the chosen MGeol Programme of study.

AIMS - intentions of the module

To undertake an independent research project associated with any aspect of geology.

On successful completion of this module you should be able to:

Module Specific Skills and Knowledge

1. use a range of academic and practical skills to research an area in the geological area;
2. show experience of working in a commercial and/or research environment;
3. demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the capabilities of specialist equipment or computer design software.

Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge

4. evaluate and apply knowledge to specific design tasks;
5. choose an appropriate experimental design from critical evaluation of available data;
6. undertake synthesis of information and create responses in terms of advanced knowledge.

Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge

7. exhibit personal data-handling skills through a critical evaluation of data, to a strict deadline;
8. utilise a full range of computer-based learning resources as an autonomous learner.
SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module

The project area is first defined with the assistance of the module leader in conjunction with an agreed academic supervisor. A plan of work is agreed with the supervisor and regular meetings are scheduled to assist the student achieve his/her aims.

A thesis is produced of 15,000-20,000 words for submission early in term 3.
