Critical to every successful academic and industrial career is the ability to communicate data analysis in your area of expertise. Through engaging with and discussing papers and data in this data science specialism we will explore the techniques of reading research/policy papers and presenting on new data analysis developments. You will develop the skills that are essential in a fast-paced and constantly developing environment.
This module aims to introduce you to the important aspects of how to develop your own original consulting/research analyses and how to communicate them effectively. To develop in you the key skills required to stay up-to-date with and communicate your subject knowledge and succeed in the professional and academic environment.
On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

Appreciate the role of reading, writing and presenting in research and consulting;

Develop literature search and reading skills, allowing you to distill key concepts from the literature;

Work collaboratively to understand advanced mathematical and scientific concepts;

A selection of papers will be chosen for discussion, and a supervised group analysis will be carried out on a related topic. Later an invidual piece of work is consucted and communicated. with mirroring the topics and speakers for the relevant seminar series that students will be expected to attend.

The module includes learning about scientific writing styles, how to initiate an effective consulting / research collaboration, how to present evidence and arguments in a relevent way. The moule uses formal lectures, coached group work (that is presented) and individual supervised work with guidance on writing a report. This is done via using two one hour lecture slots a week.

Deferrals: Reassessment will be by coursework in the deferred element only. For deferred candidates, the module mark will be uncapped.
Referrals: Reassessment will be by a single piece of coursework, combining a report and presentation, worth 100% of the module only. As it is a referral, the mark will be capped at 50%.
