Module description
Study Abroad is an integral and assessed part of the 4 year undergraduate BSc (Hons) Medical Sciences (with Study Abroad) degree programme and its variants offered by the faculty of Health and Life Sciences (HLS). It takes place in Year 3 of the programme. During your Study Abroad you will remain a student of the HLS and retain access to all HLS and University of Exeter resources. The Study Abroad year will count towards one seventh of the student’s final degree score (the combined average ratio for years 2, 3 and 4 being weighted at 2:1:4).
Study Abroad provides you with the opportunity to spend one year in a different country taking modules in medical sciences subjects. The partner institutions all offer tuition in English and include countries in Europe as well as in English speaking countries This allows you to experience life in a different country, learn how some international healthcare systems work, and start making connections to grow your professional network. In addition, Study Abroad will enhance your intangible skills such as enhanced communication, confidence, problem solving and time management skills, and give you a unique entry on your CV.

- Help you gain experience in understanding global issues in medicine.
- Promote learning from a structured reflection of your Study Abroad experience.
- Develop personal and key intangible skills in communication and problem solving through the managing of learning in a new environment, along with the potential of learning about a new culture and possibly picking up a new language.
- Enhance the professional and developmental gain obtained from the Study Abroad experience and how learned skills can be transferred to your future career.

Syllabus plan
We will work with you to identify the partner institution in which you will thrive. We will help you choose the medical sciences-related modules that are closest to your strengths and aspirations
You are expected to attend all learning sessions at the partner institution, and pass any assessments that are set. Once back, you will write a reflective report of your time abroad, identifying the general, scientific and professional learnings of your experience, and how you will use them to enhance your future career.
While abroad, the Study Abroad module convener and your academic tutor will remain in contact with you over video-conference meetings. You will continue engagement with your Academic, Personal and Professional Learning Evaluation forms which will capture your experiences and provide you with the framework for reflection about them.
In the event that your Study Abroad experience is curtailed due to global issues such as a pandemic or political strife, you may still be able to participate virtually or you may transfer to the 3-year programme.

Attendance is mandatory for module sessions at partner institution and will vary from student to student depending on the norms of the partner institution and the modules chosen. The total will match the number of teaching and learning hours spent per year at Medical Sciences here at Exeter. Re-assessment notes

In the case of module failure abroad, and if the 10% professionalism grade does not allow them to go over the pass threshold, the student will have to transfer to the 3 year BSc (Hons.) Medical Sciences programme. In the event of transferring back to the 3 year programme, the Study Abroad mark will not count towards the degree classification, although it will remain on the student’s final degree transcript. Due to the nature of Study Abroad, it is not possible to repeat the placement.
