Module description

In this module your clinical work continues. You will see two more patients, at a minimum of 42 weeks a year over the course of a minimum of two further years. This will be in a setting agreed with programme staff, but usually in private practice if you have seen patients in Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Clinical Practice I in an institutional setting (e.g. NHS clinic). Your clinical work will be supervised by a programme accredited senior analyst/psychoanalytic therapist weekly, with a different supervisor for each on-going patient.

Your casework will depend on whether you wish to pursue a professional qualification as a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist (200 min hours), or a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist (441 min hours). See the appropriate Learning and Teaching table for more information.

In collaboration with each of your supervisors, you will complete formative or summative assessments.

You will keep a written record of sessions and use this to present your work weekly to your clinical supervisors and staff and students, in the clinical reflective practice seminars.

All other stage one modules are a pre-requisite to this module. All other stage two modules are a co-requisite to this module. This module is taught in the third and fourth year of your study.

Syllabus plan

Your syllabus plan will depend on whether you wish to pursue a professional qualification as a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist or a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. Please see the information below, and the corresponding Learning and Teaching table.

For practical purposes, hours are considered 50 mins' hours. If you are pursuing professional qualification as a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist your casework with individual clients will consist of a minimum of 189 hours:

  • One patient seen twice weekly for a minimum of eighteen months (42 weeks a year minimum). You will have once a week supervision over this period with an accredited training supervisor.

  • One patient seen once weekly for a minimum of eighteen months (42 weeks a year minimum). You will have once a week supervision over this period with an accredited training supervisor.

You will attend a minimum 126 hours Clinical supervision over a minimum of 42 weeks per year, during the period that you are engaged in clinical work.

If you are pursuing professional qualification as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist your casework with individual clients will consist of a minimum of 441 hours:

  • One patient seen three times weekly for a minimum of two years (42 weeks a year minimum). You will have once a week supervision over this period with an accredited training supervisor.

  • One patient seen three times weekly for a minimum of eighteen months (42 weeks a year minimum). You will have once a week supervision over this period with an accredited training supervisor.

You will attend a minimum 147 hours Clinical supervision for a minimum of 42 weeks per year, during the period that you are engaged in clinical work.

For both the Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic professional qualifications:

  • You are required to write up process notes for sessions with your patients which you will use in supervision and in case discussions with staff and other students.

  • You will keep a log of your clinical contacts using the designated form and submit this at the end of each Year until completion of the Module.

  • You will be assessed (formative assessment) by each of your supervisors on your clinical work a minimum of three times on the Psychodynamic stream and four times on the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy stream during this module: at the end of six months after commencing seeing each patient and then six monthly thereafter. This assessment will be completed initially by both you and your supervisor, separately in the manner described in the course handbook/from the programme administrator. You will discuss the comments made by you and your supervisor and the outcome of this discussion will then be recorded on the supervisor’s form along with any remaining comments, areas for development and any disagreements that either party wants to include. You must achieve a ‘pass’ grade on the skills outlined above in order to pass in this module.  Please note that while your supervisor will be asked to assess whether you have met the criterion for a 'pass', this is a recommendation only. The academic team will review and grade the clinical placement paperwork.

  • You will also complete a Clinical activity account of a case assignment (summative assessment), which will describe your clinical cases seen under supervision. These will include the ways in which you have linked clinical practise to theory, your use of supervision and demonstrate your understanding of ethical practice and the maintaining of confidentiality across this module and the Clinical Reflective Practice modules.

Re-assessment notes

In relation to your Report of Clinical Activity: Account of a Case submission, where you have been given amendments, major or minor, you will have the opportunity to submit an amended version of your Report, which addresses the points made in the feedback you are given by the marker(s) and moderator. You must also write a letter to the marker, accompanying your resubmission, which describes how you have addressed the points made in the feedback. You will have 4 weeks to complete minor amendments and 8 weeks to complete major amendments.

If you have major amendments and your resubmission is marked as needing minor amendments, you will then have a further 4 weeks to resubmit a second time. If you have minor amendments and if on re-marking your resubmission still requires minor amendments, you will be given a ‘fail’ mark. If you fail an assignment you will be given the opportunity to submit a completely new submission and will have 8 weeks to do this in.

If you again fail, you will then have failed in the module and consequently you will have failed the programme also and your registration as a student of the University will be terminated.

If you do not reach an overall ‘satisfactory’ level, or above, in the assessment of your clinical work, in all categories in your final report, you will be allowed to undertake a further period of clinical work of up to six months, in order to allow you to reach this minimum, ‘satisfactory’ level. If this has not been reached by then there will be a meeting between you, your supervisor(s) and programme staff, to consider whether it is possible for you to achieve a ‘satisfactory’ level. If there is agreement that it may be possible, you can have a further period of up to six months clinical work. If it is not you will have failed the module and your registration as a student of the University will be terminated.
