In-Between Lines hosted its 2nd event at the Fish Factory Arts Space in Penryn from 26th-30th January. The first night was a craft workshop, where we made Zines, a small, magazine-like publication relating to our ideas of identity. The informal and non-technical nature of the event meant that it was very accessible and could have lots of great conversations. We found it incredibly therapeutic, and following the format's success, we'll definitely be having workshops at future events.
Our other event was a conversation panel with the creators. Firstly, we answered questions on how our adoption and mixedness affected our childhood, relationships, study, work, and personal growth. Then we received some very interesting questions from the audience, ranging from the fetishization of the adoptive experience e.g.: Harry Potter, to how we're keeping our authentic voice intact whilst working with large institutions. It was amazing to see so many people engaging positively with our work, and we gratefully received lots of useful advice and new contacts.
Overall, the weekend was incredibly rewarding and inspiring. It was incredibly validating to hear how our experiences touched and reinforced people's perception of themselves, so we will take that energy to London. We also managed to explore Penryn and Falmouth, both of which are incredibly beautiful and the food was amazing! Everyone was so friendly, and I will certainly be back in the summer to see the friends I've made.
The In-Between Lines team would like to thank the Exeter Decolonising Network, the Fish Factory, and the University of Exeter for their support.
