Biochemistry

GCSE Mathematics grade B/5.

Either GCSE Double Award Science or GCSE Chemistry at grade C/4.

A-Level Biology and Chemistry grade B, within the overall offer range.

IB HL Biology and Chemistry 5 within the overall offer range.

Biological Sciences: Molecular and Cellular Biology

GCSE Mathematics grade B/5.

Either GCSE Double Award Science or GCSE Chemistry at grade C/4.

A-Level Biology grade B or IB HL Biology grade 5.

Biomedical Sciences

At least one grade A and one grade B in GCE AL science subjects, one of which must be Biology.

At least one HL6 and one HL5 in IB science subjects, one of which must be Biology.

AL or HL science subjects include: Biology/Human Biology*; Chemistry; Computing; Design and Technology; Electronics; Environmental Science; Environmental Studies; Geography; Geology; Maths/Pure Maths/Further Maths; Life and Health Sciences; Physical Education; Physics; Psychology; Science (applied); Statistics; IB Higher Level Sport Science. 

*If more than one of these is taken they would only count as one ‘science’ but could count as two A levels towards our general requirements.

Biosciences: Animal Biology and Ecology

GCSE Mathematics grade B/5.

Either GCSE Double Award Science or GCSE Chemistry at grade C/4.

A-Level Biology grade B or IB HL Biology grade 5.

British Sign Language (minor)

British Sign Language can be taken as a language-only, 30-credit pathway through the Language Centre. There are no prior language requirements for this.

Chemistry

GCSE Mathematics grade B/5.

Either GCSE Double Award Science or GCSE Chemistry at grade C/4.

A-Level Chemistry, plus Maths or Biology or Physics grade B, within the overall offer range.

IB HL Chemistry plus Maths or Biology or Physics grade 5 within the overall offer range.

Classical Studies

Classics

Computer Science

A-Level Mathematics grade B.

IB HL Mathematics grade 5.

Criminology

Drama

Economics

No requirement for Economics to have been studied previously.

English

A Level English Literature grade B, A Level English Language and Literature grade B or A Level English Language grade B.

Exercise and Sport Sciences

An A-Level grade B or IB HL5 in a science subject.

  • Advanced Route: A-Level grade B or IB HL 5 or SL6 in French
  • Beginner Route: There is no requirement for a modern foreign language to have been studied previously.

A range of language modules, catering for different entry levels, are also available through the Language Centre as a 30-credit pathway.

Geography

  • Human Geography: A-Level grade B or IB HL 5 in humanities or social science subject.
  • Physical Geography: A-Level grade B or IB HL 5 in a science subject (see list below).

Note – you can study either human or physical Geography but you may not be able to take some of the physical Geography modules if you don’t have a science A-Level or equivalent.

Japanese can be taken as a language-only, 30-credit pathway through the Foreign Language Centre. There are no prior language requirements for this.

Korean (minor)

Korean can be taken as a language-only, 30-credit pathway through the Foreign Language Centre. There are no prior language requirements for this.

Latin

No specific A-Levels required.

Mandarin Chinese 

Beginner Route: There is no requirement for a modern foreign language to have been studied previously.

The only Advanced Route (A-Level or IB HL/SL) for Mandarin Chinese is as a third subject/ minor via the Language Centre. A range of language modules, catering for different entry levels, are also available through the Foreign Language Centre as a 30-credit pathway.

Management

GCSE Mathematics grade B/5 or AS-Level/A-Level Maths.

Mathematics

A-Level Mathematics grade A.

Media and Communications

Medical Humanities

Portuguese

  • Beginner Route: There is no requirement for a modern foreign language to have been studied previously. (A-Level or IB HL/SL Portuguese is not possible, as no Advanced Route currently exists).

Please note that Portuguese is available for Language Centre (LC) students but is taken through the Department of Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies (LCVS). LC students completing 60 credits of Portuguese through LCVS will graduate "with proficiency in Portuguese". Please note that Portuguese may not always be available as a major for LCVS students.

Religion

No specific A-Levels required.

Russian

  • Advanced Route: A-Level grade B or IB HL 5 or SL6 in Russian.
  • Beginner Route: There is no requirement for a modern foreign language to have been studied previously. (A-Level or IB HL/SL Russian is not possible, as no Advanced Route currently exists).

Beginners' Russian entry is also available through the Foreign Language Centre as a 30-credit pathway. Students following this route may not be able to take non-language modules in the Russian Unit, as these are usually for ML students.

Sociology

No specific A-Levels required.

Spanish

  • Advanced Route: A-Level grade B or IB HL 5 or SL6 in Spanish.
  • Beginner Route: There is no requirement for a modern foreign language to have been studied previously.
