Phagocytosis is the fascinating process by which our immune cells engulf and destroy foreign particles. How easily such cells can destroy a foreign particle depends crucially on the particle shape and size, and the direction that the cell meets the particle. This is directly relevant to the design of microparticle drug delivery systems (tiny particles that can be used to carry drugs) since such particles must be carefully designed to avoid removal via phagocytosis. Click below for a gentle introduction to these topics and how our work is helping.
