Jackson Lu, from Sloan School of Management, MIT, was awarded the Rising Star award, which recognises early career academics making a significant contribution in the field of leadership.
Jackson, who is Assistant Professor of Work and Organisation Studies, is known for his research into the “bamboo ceiling”. This phenomenon sees East Asians being under-represented in US leadership roles, despite their educational and economic achievements. His other main area of research is how multicultural experiences (e.g., working abroad, intercultural friendships), shape key outcomes for organisations.
Jackson’s work has been published in leading journals such as Nature Human Behaviour, Organisation Science and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and featured in mainstream media outlets. In 2019, he was named as one of Poets & Quants’ Best 40 under 40 MBA Professors.
The Rising Star Award was established in 2019 by the Exeter Centre for Leadership in partnership with the Network of Leadership Scholars. It aims to promote the work of highly promising junior scholars and is judged by a committee chaired by Professor Berrin Erdogan, Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Exeter Business School and Professor of Management at Portland State University, USA.

The winner was awarded £1,500 towards their research and invited to help judge the following year’s award.
