This page contains training and support resources to help mentees throughout the Career Mentor Scheme.

Mentee Training Guide

Before mentoring begins, every mentee is provided with a guide which contains useful resources, allows you to set objectives, and acts as a step-by-step guide throughout the mentoring process.

Resources to help you achieve your objectives

At the start of the mentoring partnership, mentees should identify the objectives they want to achieve by the end of the scheme. You can refer to the Mentee Training Guide for help with this.

Below are links to internal and external resources for you to share with your mentor to help you achieve your chosen objectives. 

Objective: Increase my knowledge of job hunting resources in this sector (e.g. web pages, printed materials and recruitment events)
Tips / resources: Ask your mentor for specific career planning websites, printed materials and recruitment events related to their sector.

Objective: Increase my knowledge of effective application forms in this sector
Tips / resources: Ask your mentor if you can test an application form from their organisation and ask if they can provide feedback. Send your mentor an example covering letter and ask if they can provide feedback.

Objective: Increase my knowledge of effective interview techniques in this sector
Tips / resources: Ask your mentor if they can conduct a mock interview with you for an example job at their organisation and ask if they can provide feedback.

Objective: Increase my knowledge of finding internships and work experience in this sector
Tips / resources: Ask your mentor if they could suggest work experience/internship opportunities in their sector and suggest possible organisations that you could apply for.

Objective: Improve my personal development skills (e.g. confidence building, listening skills)
Tips / resources: Ask your mentor to help you with a personal skill you would like to develop (e.g. listening skills). Refer to the links below for workshops and activities that can help you to improve these skills.

Objective: Improve my knowledge of further education/professional courses related in the sector I'm interested in.
Tips / resources: Ask you mentor if they can suggest any training or professional courses which could help you to achieve your career goals.

Objective: Make new contacts and explore networking opportunities

Tips / resources: Ask your mentor to suggest networking events, conferences, or online networking opportunities which you could join.

Objective: Increased knowledge of the sector entry requirements and pro's and con's of the sector

Tips / resources: Ask your mentor for the expected entry requirements/level of the experience required for jobs at different levels in their sector. Ask your mentor to share their experiences of the positive and challenging aspects of their job, organisation and the sector.

Objective: Improve my CV

Tips / resources: Ask your mentor to proofread your CV and suggest the ways you could strengthen your CV. If you need to create a CV for the first time, try searching the templates available on MS Word.
